Materials for Self-Represented Litigants

The court understands that hiring an attorney is simply not an option for everyone. In order to assist those litigants, the court provides the following tips and links. However, the court cannot give legal advice nor instruct a litigant as to how to present his or her case.

What You Need to Know:

  • All issues presented to the court must be in the form of a written motion filed with the Clerk of Court. Information on filing can be obtained from the Clerk’s website.

  • Although the court is unable to provide legal advice, there are services available to those unable to hire attorneys. The Shreveport Bar Association and The Louisiana Bar Association provide numerous resources for such litigants.

  • Please remember that neither the judge nor his staff can discuss your case with you outside of formal court procedures. This is to protect your rights and the rights of others involved in your case. By law, requests for appointments or phone calls with the judge or his staff will be denied.

Preparing for Court:

All parties and witnesses are expected to conduct themselves professionally and courteously. You are also expected to be prepared. The judge cannot act as your attorney nor can he treat you any differently than he would an attorney. For guidance on how to prepare for court, please review the following materials:
